As a 13-year resident of the Town of Richmond with two daughters who attend Middle and Elementary school at Honeoye, I have a vested interest in the school district and strong motivation for seeking this position. I want to work to ensure that our children receive the education today that they need to succeed in a continually evolving workforce. As a district, we need to make sure that we continue to focus on what's important, and to ever improve and adapt our education system to meet the demands of our world.
I am a 1989 graduate of Avoca Central School, another small-town district, where my graduating class was approximately 50 students, so I can appreciate the advantage of knowing all of your classmates by name. I obtained a BSET in Electrical Engineering from SUNY-Alfred in 1993, and then earned my MSEE degree from Alfred University in 2001. I am a 19-year "veteran" of Harris RF Communications in Rochester, where I have had the opportunity to do what I love (design), to author articles and conference papers, and to obtain two U.S. Patents.
In the Honeoye community, I started and ran (for three years) a robotics program (FIRST Lego League) geared toward elementary students in grades 4 through 6. Starting the program from scratch involved a lot of organizational skills, marketing, donation seeking, and countless hours of my own time and effort to develop lessons and coach the students. I am proud of the teams' achievements (2 of the 3 years advancing to the regional tournament at the U of R). More recently, I have been involved with the Honeoye ASA Softball youth league.
I hope to bring a fresh perspective to the Board, to be an advocate for both parental and student interests, and to help improve the quality of education at Honeoye. I believe that school districts should band together to oppose certain state mandates. Finally, I don't believe the current regimen of state standardized testing is the best way to ensure our students are learning what they need to succeed.
We face a lot of challenges in education in the future, and I am ready to help tackle them. I look forward to serving the Honeoye community.
